Vice President Harris Pens Juneteenth Letter to Florida’s Equal Ground Highlighting Tireless Efforts of the Black-Led Voting Rights Organization
The new letter from VP Harris comes as Equal Ground kicks off a Juneteenth Day of Action mobilizing Black Floridians and protecting the freedom to vote
ORLANDO – Today, as the country observes Juneteenth – the commemoration of African American freedom – Vice President Kamala Harris has spotlighted Florida’s preeminent Black-led, non-partisan, non-profit organization working to expand Black political power in the state, Equal Ground Education Fund, in a new letter.
Highlighting the organization’s “tireless efforts to uplift some of our Nation’s historical underserved communities,” the letter from VP Harris comes as Equal Ground kicks off a Juneteenth Day of Action, which will bring together over a hundred volunteers to mobilize and educate Black Floridians around recent voter changes and what they must do in order to vote this election.
As Vice President Harris calls out, “across our Nation, extremists have attacked the sacred freedom to vote,” and Equal Ground is doing everything in their power to combat voter suppression tactics in Florida – tactics that have purged nearly 450,000 Black voters from vote-by-mail rolls in efforts to disenfranchise and silence Black voters across the state.
“Today, as we commemorate 159 years since enslaved Black people across the country were freed from slavery, we also live with the reality that extreme lawmakers are rewriting that very history and working to silence us just like they did nearly 160 years ago,” said Genesis Robinson, interim executive director of Equal Ground. “As an organization that has been at the forefront of the fight for issues that impact the Black Community, we could not be more humbled by Vice President Harris’ acknowledgement of our work, and we could not be more steadfast in our dedication to ensuring that Black Floridians have all of the rights, freedoms, and power afforded to every other Floridian.”
As Florida has emerged as the epicenter of fascist ideologies, spearheading the nationwide erasure of Black history, culture, diversity, equality, and inclusion, Equal Ground has been on the frontlines calling out hate and calling in a community rooted in deep faith and resilience. While extreme lawmakers continue to wield their power to silence underserved communities, Equal Ground will ensure that all voters know how to make their voices heard.
“This Juneteenth, we are continuing our efforts to combat attacks on Black Floridians and voter suppression tactics the best way we know how: reaching out directly to our community. No matter what extremist lawmakers do, our community will not be silenced and our resilience will not be broken,” continued Robinson.
Equal Ground Interim Executive Director Genesis Robinson is available for interviews to discuss the momentous letter and continued work of Equal Ground. To schedule interviews with Genesis Robinson, email team@feldmanstrategies.com.
