Official Statement on Vice President Harris' announcement of a 4-Part Voting Rights Plan

“Equal Ground applauds the continued efforts of the Biden-Harris Administration to protect our democracy and encourage civic participation. As a voting rights organization based in Florida- a state that is notorious for attacking our election process and limiting access to the ballot box, we welcome the provisions outlined in the four-point plan announced by the administration. This plan will ensure information access, promote voter participation, protect those who administer our elections, and fight voter suppression laws. With the Florida Legislature refusing to act on pro-democracy legislation like the "The Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Florida Voting Rights Act”, we are grateful for the administration demonstrating leadership and doing their part to make a difference. The fight to safeguard our democracy requires all hands on deck and any resources in support of that goal is appreciated.”

Ensuring Information Access:

The administration aims to make sure that every American knows how to vote when they are eligible. Federal agencies have been charged with the responsibility to disseminate information on voter registration. For example, HHS (Health and Human Services) has been tasked with emailing information on how to register to vote to everyone who enrolls in the Affordable Care Act (ACA). The administration has also announced three national “days of action” to promote voting. Those dates are Juneteenth, June 19th, the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act on Aug. 6th, and National Voter Registration Day on Sept. 17th.

Promoting Voter Participation for Students:

Under the federal work-study program, students are now allowed to get paid to register people to vote and to be nonpartisan poll workers. This initiative aims to engage young leaders in the democratic process and address the shortage of poll workers.

Protecting Election Workers:

In response to rising threats against poll workers, the administration has taken steps to protect their well-being and livelihoods. The Department of Justice has created the Elections Threats Taskforce to train local officials and protect election workers.

Fighting Voter Suppression Laws:

The administration is fighting against voter suppression laws in various states. The Department of Justice has challenged laws that discriminate and is working to ensure that all Americans can exercise their right to vote freely and fairly.
