Florida’s Leading Pastors to Join Equal Ground Action Fund in Press Conference on Capitol Steps Urging Lawmakers to Oppose Bills Restricting Ballot Access

TALLAHASSEE -- On Thursday, March 25th at 10 a.m. E.T., Equal Ground Action Fund, the preeminent Black led non-partisan, non-profit working on building Black political power in Florida, will team up with the Florida State Network of African American Clergy Alliances, Faith in Public Life and other community leaders for a press conference urging Florida’s lawmakers to vote against legislation that limits ballot access and makes voting less accessible to all.

During Thursday’s press conference, Bishop-Elect Derrick McRae, who is the president of the African-American Council of Christian Clergy and Pastor of the Experience Christian Center in Orlando, Reverend Dr. R.B. Holmes, President of the Tallahassee Chapter’s National Action Network and Pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Tallahassee, Pastor Reginald Gundy, Florida Chair of African American Ministers in Action and Pastor of Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church of Jacksonville, FL and others will speak on the threat of increased voter suppression directly affecting their communities and specifically the dangers of legislation like SB90 if passed.

SB90 is a bill that would severely hinder voter participation by eliminating drop boxes throughout Florida communities, and also outlines additional provisions that would serve as grave impediments to the voting process, like wiping the vote by mail roles each year.

This press conference comes on the heels of the partnership’s letter from many of the state’s leading pastors to the Rules Committee in the State Senate, which warns of SB90 causing significant confusion and exacerbating a narrative of voter suppression for people in certain communities; especially given that 70% of Florida voters support and utilize these drop boxes.
